DRD Tryouts 2014

Hello Skater,
Denver Roller Dolls will finally be holding the first tryout of the 2014 season on March 9th, at 3:00pm.   The wait is over; come on out and show us what you've got!
As the first tryout of the Denver Roller Dolls season, we are interested in many levels of skaters that are willing to work hard and learn derby quickly. No previous derby experience required! If you are interested in try-outs, here are some things you need to know:- The Glitterdome is the DRD practice warehouse located at 3600 Wynkoop, Suite A, Denver. Please look up directions online.- Try-outs will start promptly at 3:00pm. You need to show up a minimum of 15 minutes early to sign in and get your skate gear on. The doors will open at 2:30 to begin sign-in.- Try-outs will be free. We WILL have rental skates available for everyone at a cost of $3. Please bring cash, and ideally, exact amount as we are not equipped to do credit cards or make lots of change.- You must be 18 years or older on the tryout date. Your ID will be checked at sign-in, so make sure to have your license with you.- Feel free to bring any gear you would like to try out or skate in. This includes quad skates and any protective gear (helmet, wrist, knee, elbow pads, etc).  We have skates to rent and there is some loaner protective gear if you would like to borrow some, but it will not be required. Wearing a helmet is highly recommended. Feel free to wear any type you have (bike, snowboard, kayak, whatever).- Tap water is available but you will need to bring your own bottle as there are no cups available.- You may bring interested friends to these events, but please leave your family and supporters behind. We found that this causes unnecessary distractions and they will be asked to leave. To prepare you for what we will be looking for, the following information is provided:- We will be looking at stopping and starting. Can you stop using your toe-stops? Can you perform a T-Stop? A T-Stop is when you turn one foot perpendicular to your front foot and drag your wheels until you stop. Can you return to skating smoothly after being stopped?- You will be asked to slalom around cones placed a couple feet apart from each other in a line. Do you transfer your weight to your inside foot and use your shoulders to help turn you? This drill is not about speed; it is about agility. Do you keep your knees bent and maintain stability?- Can you do cross-overs? THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL. Can you fluidly cross on your turns? If you can, practice going faster and staying lower, with your knees bent and your shoulders over your knees.- We will time you on 8 laps around the derby track. There is not a specific time you must beat, but you are competing with other recruits. This will take you around 1.5 to 2 minutes. If you fall, do you recover quickly? Are you crossing? Stable on your skates? Please email join@denverrollerdolls.org for more info and to let us know if you can make the tryout date!Pass this info out to all your friends who may be interested. Can't wait to meet you!
