Major Turbulence Ahead!
Thank you for your interest in Junior Roller Derby and Major Turbulence! Major Turbulence is a co-ed junior flat-track roller derby program run by Denver Roller Derby. It is open to all youth age 7 – 17.
The junior coaches will be happy explain the program, fees and registration packets, or any questions you have...just email us!
If (when!) you decide to experience roller derby, please bring a copy of the skater’s birth certificate to their first practice. Every skater also needs to have the required safety gear including skates, helmet, mouth guard and pads (wrist, knee and elbow). The league does have some loaner pads available to borrow. During their first session the coaches will also assess the skater’s skating level so they can be appropriately placed.
Major Turbulence encourages and enriches young skaters by developing character, confidence, leadership, and social skills. The program also develops the athletic skills of its participants through fine tuning athletic abilities and/or discovering latent skills. These young skaters are the future of DRD and the sport of roller derby, and our league is proud to help develop the next generation of roller derby athletes!
Age Groups & Requirements
All skaters shall be 7 years or older on or before the start of their participation.
All skaters shall be 17 or younger at the start of the season.
The skater’s skills will be assessed by the coaches who will place skaters in the appropriate skill group (Level 1, 2 or 3).
Registration Fee, Dues, and Insurance Coverage
Each skater is required to pay a $30 annual Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA) insurance fee. It is good through the December 31 of the current calendar year. In addition, skaters are REQUIRED to have their own primary insurance.
League Dues can be paid monthly or quarterly (quarterly dues will receive a discounted rate). The cost for beginner skaters is $25 per month. The cost for advanced skaters is $30 per month. There is also a once-per- year league registration fee of $15.
If a skater is offered the opportunity to scrimmage during a DRD bout or any other prospective events, all spectators/parents may be charged admission to the event.
All payments of insurance, dues and the registration fee will be invoiced via email from our Finance Committee.
Skates & Safety Equipment
Required safety gear includes a helmet, mouth guard, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards.
Skates will be available to use at the Rollerdome on a temporary basis. However, these aren’t always in the greatest of shape, and they can hinder a skater's progress over the long term. Once skaters have become dedicated to the sport, participants are expected to purchase their own skates. Please talk to a coach for more information, including some awesome discounts and deals from local skate shop sponsors.
The junior team has safety gear (except mouth guards) that may be borrowed at the Rollerdome.
Skaters need to own ALL required safety gear by the 4th week of participation.
Each participant must have his/her own mouth guard at every practice or they will not be allowed to participate.
